“Evolved” by PhenomenaLewis, self-portrait photograph was photographed in my bedroom in March of 2020 showing me, PhenomenaLewis, a dark-skinned Black woman with exaggerated dark skin wrapped in teal blanket with hoop earrings staring directly at the camera with 3/4 of her face showing on a soft peach color background. This self-portrait photograph, Evolved, was my first photograph in color and to me it was the start of a new era in my art career. I was evolving from Black and white and monochromatic dark toned artworks to colorful and vibrant art.
It was a shift in my mentality as well where at first, I was creating art to make people uncomfortable, now I want to make people feel comfortable and soft, same with myself.
It's a new era of healing for me and my art and it started with this self-portrait right here.
