"A Gift of Friendship” by Billy Hawk and Lewis Derogene also known as PhenomenaLewis.

This photograph, created during our November 2022 art residency at Chateau Orquevaux in France, is another beautiful result of the collaboration between myself and Billy Hawk. It captures a heartfelt and poignant moment shared just before Billy's left to head back to the United States.
As we prepared for his departure, we decided to create together what was a fun and beautiful moment. We transformed my studio, placing a chair on top of a table and adorning that same table with a still life arrangement. The collaboration was a fusion of pure fun, silliness, and a tapestry of unforgettable memories. Every minute spent on this project was a treasure.
In this specific photograph, captured through the lens of Billy's camera, a striking pose emerged. Billy sits gracefully on the chair on top of the table, exuding a calm and noble presence, while I, in a relaxed posture, face him. My elbow rested comfortably on a pillow with a book in hand. My other hand gently offers a pomegranate to Billy. His hand drapes casually over the pomegranate, as if ready to accept this gift, an expression of subtle grandeur on his face.
This frame encapsulates a profound connection, a shared moment of friendship, and the exchange of emotion and empathy. As you look at this photograph, I invite you to explore the emotions it evokes. The play of light and mood conveys a myriad of feelings, a sense of the sublime captured in a single moment.
Among the many photographs created that day, this one stands out as a cherished favorite, a memory I hold dear. This project, akin to a memoir, is a treasure I will always cherish.

“Through the Lens of Friendship: A Memoir in Art” by Billy Hawk and Lewis Derogene also known as PhenomenaLewis.

This artwork, “Through the Lens of Friendship”, holds a special place in my story - a story of a deep and joyful connection that unfolded between my dear friend, Billy Hawk, and me during our Chateau Orquevaux residency in France in November of 2022.

One day, we decided to have a bit of fun and both dressed in all-black attire before Billy went back to the States. We transformed my studio into a world of imagination, with an elegant chair balanced on one of the largest tables in my studio and soft fabrics to create the backdrop. Our props, collected from the back room of the hill house’s top floor, turned into a charming still life on the table.

Among the many photographs captured that day, two poses stood out to me while editing. In one frame, I found myself upside down sitting on the chair we placed on top of the table, gently holding Billy's hair. One foot was stabilized on the table while my other foot rested against a feather in the still life, adding a touch of the surreal. Meanwhile, Billy's gaze fixed on some distant point in the studio with a somber look on his face with an opened book in his hand.

With Billy's camera, we approached this photograph without any preset themes or rigid concepts. What happened was pure happiness and a shared sense of goofiness. I can still remember my playful urge to "eat" Billy's hair as we struck a pose. This light-hearted moment had us breaking character and crying out in laughter. Our studio mates walked in, adding to the fun, and a collection of images captured our joyful bond.

Our artistic journey was a beautiful blend of creativity, spontaneity, and shared giddiness.

Collaborating with Billy was a mix of creativity and friendship that overflowed with love and joy. As I look back on this cherished moment, my heart swells with gratitude, and I eagerly await more opportunities to create alongside Billy in the future.

“Through the Lens of Friendship: A Memoir in Art” is a reflection of the profound connection we shared during our creative adventure. It captures the essence of our friendship, marked by lightheartedness and the love that binds us as friends.
